Custodianship.
Custodian is a responsible adult, a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, who agreed to supervise and support the minor student. Custodianship is required for minor students to obtain a study permit.
You may need a legal custodian to reside in Canada without a legal guardian or parent(s) if you are younger than:

18 y.o. and your province of destination is either Ontario, Alberta, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, or Saskatchewan;

19 y.o. and your province of destination is either British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, or Yukon.
