Applying for a Study Permit in 2025? Avoid These Common Mistakes

It’s Time to Start Your Study Permit Application 🗓️

If you’ve received or are expecting an offer from an Ontario college, now is the time to start preparing your visa application.

Study permits can take 8 to 12 weeks or more to process, and missing documents or small errors can lead to delays or even refusals.

Here are the most common mistakes international students make — and how you can avoid them.

1. Submitting an Application Without a PAL ❌

Canada now requires a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) for most study permit applications.

If you apply without it, your application will be automatically refused.✔️ Make sure your Ontario college has issued your PAL before submitting your visa application.

2. Incomplete or Incorrect Proof of Funds 💸

Starting January 2025, students must show proof of at least 20,635 CAD in living expenses — in addition to tuition.

Applications are often refused because:

  • Bank statements are missing or unclear

  • The amount shown is not enough

  • The source of funds is not explained

✔️ Be specific, and include all supporting documents like GIC letters, sponsorship letters, and income proof if someone is supporting you.

3. Using an Unlicensed or Unverified Agent 🕵️‍♂️

Some students unknowingly apply through unofficial agents or consultants who may provide fake documents or incorrect advice.

This can result in:

  • Delayed PAL processing

  • Study permit refusals

  • Long-term bans from reapplying

✔️ Always apply through verified channels like CollegeApply.

4. Applying Too Late 🕒

If you wait too long to apply for your visa, you may not get a decision in time for your program start date.

Even with a Letter of Acceptance and PAL, you can lose your spot if your visa isn’t approved in time.

✔️ We recommend applying for your study permit as early as possible to avoid delays

5. Uploading the Wrong File Format or Expired Documents 📎

IRCC has strict rules about what documents are accepted.

You must upload:

  • PDFs that are clear and not password-protected

  • Valid passports with enough time left before expiry

  • Language test results (if required) that are still valid

✔️ Check each file before uploading, and include certified translations if needed.
